In the past couple years, the orca population has been at the forefront of a problem all over Alaska: changing weather is changing feeding patterns due to changing weather conditions. The seal population of the Aleutians has diminished; the orca are switching to eating sea otters, but otters aren’t nearly as nutritious as seals, so not only is the otter population taking a hit from being turned into snack food, the orca population is decreasing because of the simple fact of starvation. The most distinctive feature of the orca is the black and white coloration.

Seals, Sea Lions & Otters n 25 Harbor Seals Harbor seals, like harbor porpoise, are shy and difficult to spot. They come up quietly, take a quick look around with only their head and nose protruding above the water – and the black color can make them almost impossible to spot – then they disappear. And since they can dive to 600 feet and stay down for more than 20 minutes, you might be wasting your time hoping one pops back up. Harbor seals grow to about 180 pounds. They’re covered with short hair, and are usually colored either with a dark background and light rings, or light sides and a belly with dark splotches.

The species tally is about 300, really an astounding variety. That said, most people who come to Alaska are interested in only salmon and halibut. But first, a fun fact: as of the last time anybody bothered to run the numbers – around 1997 – the average out-of-state fisherman spent $930 to catch a king salmon in Alaska. Halibut run a relatively cheap $230. Introduction The fur of a sea otter is a miraculous thing: otters have up to 125,000 hairs per square inch, more than double of just about any other mammal.
