There are a few withdrawal syndromes that include more than the reverse of the intoxication effects that we shall describe.

Onset and Course The onset of amnesia may be acute when the cause is head trauma, stroke, or certain kinds of nerve poisons, or it may appear more slowly in cases of long~term drug abuse, chronic nerve poisons, or lack of certain essential vitamins and minerals. The brain damage is more localized and less severe in amnesia than in delirium and dementia. Some amnesias appear and then vanish after a few hours or a few days. Most symptoms of amnesia are worse shortly after the trauma but lessen over time up to twenty~four months.
