This patient had an abscess of the lip that was detected in the Foot Clinic at a routine appointment, and drained as an outpatient procedure in Accident and Emergency. 40 Differential diagnosis: is it infection or a Charcot ankle? The ankle was red, warm and swollen; the problem had arisen over the previous 2 days. X-ray showed no abnormality. On presentation, an ink tracing was made on the skin around the area of redness; within 24 hours it had extended beyond the lower part of the traced area, as shown, indicating a spreading infection.
