It is thus a novel in which we are constantly required to see human words and actions, if not quite in the light of eternity, at least in relation to the future. This is especially true of the issue that forms both the main plot interest of the novel and its moral centre: the betrayal of Miss Brodie by one of her own girls. The headmistress's plot to rid her staff of the progressive and unpliable Jean Brodie provokes the questions: will she succeed? and if so, how? Miss Brodie's tragedy is that she is betrayed by one of her own girls, as Christ was by one of the Twelve.

And how simply the physical laws assert themselves, frustrating all one's purposes. (Chapter 14) In the first of these quotations it is noteworthy that Dame Lettie, herself an old woman who changes her will out of pique, refuses to recognise a truth that is among other things a truth about herself. These are, as often elsewhere, the sheep and the goats of Muriel Spark's fictional world, those who accept and those who cannot or will not accept the truth when it is presented to them. All in all, Memento Mori is not only the best of the author's first three novels but one of the most satisfying of all her books.

It should be part of the full expectancy of life. Without an ever-present sense of death life is insipid. ' and this view of death as 'part of the full expectancy of life' suggests that Mortimer is a spokesman for the authorial point of view. It is not, though, a view that is shared by the others who are present: Dame Lettie reiterates her complaints of police inefficiency, Charmian suggests sentimentally that the caller 'may be lonely, and simply wanting to talk to people', Alec clings to his pseudo-scientific theory of mass-hysteria, and so on.
